JOOTRH Advances Comprehensive Sickle Cell Care Through Early Diagnosis and Specialised Treatment

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital has advanced comprehensive sickle cell care through early diagnosis and specialised treatment.

Dr Brenda Misore, Paediatric Haematologist and Oncologist at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), during her presentation at the ongoing National Health Summit at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), said diagnosis was being undertaken at the early age of the child.

“Every child diagnosed, crisis is managed promptly, and every family is equipped with knowledge, which brings Kenya closer to a future where sickle cell disease can be managed without limiting patients’ ability to live healthy and productive lives,” she said.

Dr Misore highlighted JOOTRH’s evolving approach to sickle cell care, which has moved beyond treating complications to emphasising early diagnosis, prevention, specialised treatment, education and follow-up.

“Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that can cause recurrent painful crises, frequent hospitalisation, missed school and work, and serious complications. Kenya records an estimated 14,000 children born with the condition annually, with 17 counties identified as having a high disease burden,” she said.

Dr Misore said at JOOTRH, newborn and infant screening supports early identification, while diagnosed patients are linked to counselling, preventive care and regular follow-up.

She said a key advancement was automated red cell exchange, or apheresis, with JOOTRH currently the only public hospital offering the specialised procedure.

“The first procedure was performed on September 1, 2025, and 48 patients have since undergone the procedure over the past 11 months. The service uses the Spectra Optia Apheresis System, placed at JOOTRH by Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT). The system enables the controlled removal of sickled red blood cells and their replacement with healthy, donated red blood cells,” she said.

Covered by the Social Health Authority (SHA), the service provides an important treatment option for patients with severe complications.

Dr Misore said sustainable sickle cell care requires more than specialised equipment.

“Early detection, preventive treatment, informed families, trained healthcare workers and timely referral remain central to improving outcomes,” she said.

JOOTRH’s model demonstrates how a comprehensive care pathway can help reduce avoidable complications and give patients a better opportunity to live healthy and productive lives.
