The illusive Luhya unity opens up the rich vote block up for grabs ahead of 2027 election

The illusive Luhya Unity has opened the rich vote block up for grabs with the region turning up as the political interest zone ahead of the 2027 general elections.

For aeons, successive leaders from the Luhya community have grappled with unity for the region but all the attempts have come cropper ahead of the general election.

If anything, the Luhya community has turned out as a fertile cradle land for Presidential candidates from other regions seeking votes to win the presidency.

The Luhya land from the inception of multiparty politics has failed to rally behind the two presidential candidates, the late Wamalwa Kijana in 1the 997 election and Musalia Mudavadi in 2013.

In the 1997 election, Wamalwa was the leader of FORD-K, which was then viewed as the Luhya party and had a national outlook but still performed dismally in Luhya land and the rest of the country.

Wamalwa managed to score the highest percentage of votes in the Luhya-dominated Western Kenya garnering 48.2 per cent of the vote against Moi’s 44.9 per cent.

But this performance compared to how other candidates performed in their region could be viewed as dismal because he lost most of the votes to the outsiders.

Moi got strong Kalenjin backing securing 69.5 per cent of the votes in the Kalenjin-dominated but cosmopolitan Rift Valley while Kibaki, in the absence of Matiba, scored 89.4 per cent of the votes in the Kikuyu-dominated Central Kenya.

Raila Odinga, under NDP, garnered 56.8 per in the Luo-dominated Nyanza province which has a sizeable Kisii population in addition to the Kuria while Charity Ngilu secured 33.6 per cent in Eastern province mostly from her Kambaland backyard.

It is instructive to note that the Kalenjin, the Kikuyu and the Luo put their votes in one basket behind their “sons” while the Luhya divided their vote between Wamalwa’s FORD-K and Moi’s KANU while the Kamba divided their votes between Ngilu’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Moi’s KANU.

In the 2013 Presidential election, Mudavadi performed dismally in all the five Luhya-dominated counties of Busia, Bungoma, Vihiga, Kakamega and Trans Nzoia and only defeated Raila by a meagre 5000 votes in his Vihiga county backyard.

Out of the 14,376,284 registered voters, Mudavadi only managed a paltry of  483,981 of which he received 353864 from the Luhyaland while Raila garnered 755625 votes in western Kenya.

In Central province, Uhuru Kenyatta received  1895075 votes in his backyard while Raila got 1508776 from Nyanza.

In Kakamega county, Raila received 64 percent against Mudavadi’s 30 percent while in Busia county Raila got 86 percent against Mudavadi’s 8 percent. In Bungoma, Raila received 53 percent against Mudavadi’s 31 percent while in Vihiga Mudavadi won by 49 percent against Raila’s 46 percent.

The dismal performance of presidential candidates from the Luhya community has been attributed to the sub-tribe rivalry between the two dominant ones mainly the Bukusu and the Maragoli.

Bukusu-dominated strongholds are Bungoma and Trans-Nzoia counties while Kakamega, Vihiga and Busia are dominated by other non-Bukusu sub-tribes of the Luhya.

Currently, the luhyaland has been turned into a battleground between President William Ruto against his opponents, the impeached deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and two sons of the soil Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.

Natembeya of the Tawe movement is coming out as the political fulcrum of the region after Mudavadi merged his Amani National Congress (ANC) with President Ruto’s UDA  party.

Speaker Moses Wetangula’s Ford-K-led party is wobbling and facing a rough future from other political groupings from the region.

President Ruto has been traversing the Western region with loads of goodies to whip and woo the Luhya community into his political basket ahead of the 2027 elections.

His team includes the newly appointed cabinet secretary and former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya, Mudavadi, Wetangula and Secretary General of  COTU Mr., Francis Atwal..

“ The President’s tour of Western Kenya was purely developmental. During the last general election, we made a conscious decision to go in one direction and to support Ruto as our presidential candidate and we still support him to date.

Musalia and I resolved to support Ruto in the last general election but some people laughed at us. We stood on the ground and we saw far. We formed the government and in Bungoma County, we have three permanent secretaries in the government.

Ruto has toured every part of the villages of Western Kenya. Bungoma County, you gave Ruto the presidency and you will still support him.

We as a region, President Ruto, this is your frontier of last defence. We will move together with you,” Wetangula said.

Speaking in Bungoma Ruto said  Kenyans are united and must reject leaders who preach about shareholding, tribalism and hatred and that they have no political space in the country.

And stung by Ruto’s overtures to the Luhya community, Rigathi warned the residents of Western Kenya to be wary of the president lest he betray them just like he did to the people of Mt Kenya.

“ I want to tell the people of western Kenya to be very careful and learn from us.  The president was here for five years, spending six days a week in the Mt  Kenya region, and that is how he convinced us to vote for him. You are just being wooed the same way he wooed us. He was in every village here and knew every road by nameBut now, he has disappeared because the people of Mt Kenya know him and know that he conned us. We have seen that script before,” he said.

Natembeya and Wetangula have in the recent past engaged in supremacy battle over the control of Western Kenya which has often turned confrontational and violent on various incidences.

In his  X handle formerly Twitter Natembeya wrote “ in their own wisdom Musalia and Wetangula have invited the president to launch a transformer in Bungoma, Wakishiba hawasumbuli (if they are at their fill they don’t disturb,”.

“ANC members from Western Kenya have refuted claims of Musalia Mudavadi merging with UDA. Citing they were not consulted. It’s imperative to note that our people won’t be auctioned by egocentric politicians. Our numerical strength must count,” he wrote.

The elections of farmers and millers directors to the Kenya Sugar Biard may wait a little longer after the Kisumu High Court gave an interim conservatory order stopping the ongoing public participation and adoption of the draft procedures for electing growers and Miller’s representatives to the Board.

A group of 12 farmers had moved to Kisumu High Court through their Advocate  Steven Odumbe seeking conservatory orders issued stopping the enforcement of the foregoing illegal proceedings and deliberations.

The Kenya Sugar Board and Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries have been cited as the first and second respondents respectively.

Through their advocate, the farmers claimed the exercise was an illegal action and that it flouted the constitution.

While pending the hearing and determination of this application inter-parties, this court be pleased to issue conservatory orders restraining the 1st and 2nd  respondents either themselves or their agents, servants and or employees from recognizing, acknowledging, documenting and or keeping in records, publishing in the  Kenya Gazette the purported public participation outcome on the draft procedures for elections of growers and Miller’s representatives,” they said.

Justice Joe M Omido certified the application as urgent and granted the prayers by the applicants on an interim basis until  12th February 2025.

That the application, the main petition and all other court processes be served upon all the respondents and all interested parties within two days and that the matter be mentioned on February 12th 2025 for further direction,” he directed.

Kenya Sugar Board (KSB) had earlier directed both the Private and Public millers to nominate 50 farmers to engage in public participation on the draft procedures for electing growers and millers representatives to the Board.

The farmers were also expected  to engage in the  imposition  of the sugar development  levy

In a memo by the Acting  Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jude Chesire to the 16 sugar millers in the country read in parts “  The Sugar Act no 11 of 2024 established the Kenya sugar board. Under section 6(1) of the Act, the composition of the board includes, among others, five representatives each elected by growers from  each  sugar catchment  areas and two  representatives each  elected  by private and public-owned sugar mills.

Section 40 of the Act imposes the sugar development levy as a gazette by the cabinet secretary.

In view of the above, draft procedures for the election of grower and miller representatives to the board and an order for the imposition of the sugar development levy have been formulated.

The purpose of this letter is to notify you that the board will undertake public participation in the draft procedures and engage stakeholders on the imposition of the sugar development levy.

You are hereby requested to inform  50 farmers to attend the forums. The activity is scheduled to take place from  13th January to 16th 2025 as per the itinerary,”.

There are five sugarcane zones in the country namely the Central Zone which is made up of Kisumu, South Nandi and Kericho while the Western zone is made up of Kakamega, Siaya and Busia.

The upper Western zone is made up of Bungoma and Trans Nzoia while the Southern zone is made up of Homa Bay, Migori and Narok and finally, the Coast zone which comprises the Kwale and Tana River.

But Kenya Sugarcane Growers Association (KSCGA)and farmers have read mischief by the Board saying the move was aimed at manipulating the elections in favour of the millers to have their stooges elected.

KSCGA Secretary General Mr. Richard Ogendo threatened to move to court to stop the exercise claiming the millers have no authority to nominate farmers representatives for the public participation forums.

It is unfortunate that the Board is acting in total disregard of the farmer’s rights and in total violation of the constitution.  We will go to court to challenge the decision. The law is clear and the board must respect each jurisdiction,” he said.

Ogendo said it was wrong to call the meeting at the premises of the millers instead of a neutral ground and that it was unfortunate that the provincial administration has not been involved in public participation.

He claimed the move was aimed at giving the millers undue advantage to manipulate the elections in favour of their ‘crony’ candidate so that they could control the sector.

A farmer Mr. Philip Ochieng based in Muhoroni said the move was unfair to farmers and would undermine their constitutional rights.

The directive is unfair to farmers, how can sugar millers be authorized to select farmers to represent farmers’ interest in such a sensitive function as approving draft regulations for the electoral process of electing the new Kenya sugar board directorate?

Where is the role of the farmers out growers, saccos and farmers associations? This is akin to giving the millers the bank cheque for policy formulation and sugar pricing. This will definitely kill us sugarcane farmers for millers will simply invite their cronies,” he said.

“Keep corruption out of Mumias Sugar Company,” Mudavadi warns.

By OPCS Press Service

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has warned the new management of Mumias Sugar Company and local leaders to keep corruption out of the management of the sugar mill.

Mudavadi said corruption poses a severe existential threat to the aspirations of the employees, cane farmers and the community.

Speaking in Mumias where he had accompanied President William Ruto during the launch of the issuance of bonuses for sugarcane farmers, Mudavadi noted that graft led to the collapse of Mumias Sugar Company and affected thousands of livelihoods that were dependent on the sugar milling factory.

All this was as a result of mismanagement of resources and swindling of funds through unscrupulous ways by individuals who didn’t mean well for the employees and farmers,” he added.

He said corruption is both expensive and painful as it has led to the collapse of industries and institutions and affected the growth of the economy.

Giving an example of Mumias Sugar Company he said it has taken years to see Mumias Sugar bounce back to its feet.

The patience farmers have displayed over the years since the collapse of the Mumias Sugar Company is unbearable. I deeply appreciate the resilience and unwavering determination they had to bear with as they endured the tough times.” regretted Mudavadi.

He has called on all Kenyans to desist from engaging in corrupt activities at all costs.

He noted that the revamping of the sugar mill would bring good tidings to the investors, farmers and business people and contribute to the growth of the country’s GDP in terms of revenue collection.

The roaring back of Mumias Sugar Company will bring money into people’s pockets, for farmers, businesses and investors which will eventually help the government on taxes. It will also help in improving the country’s sugar production. Investors will now get the best returns while farmers and employees get their favourable share of the input they give.” said Mudavadi.

Today marks a historic moment as we roll out the first-ever bonuses for sugarcane farmers. I thank President Ruto for his relentless efforts in ensuring that the iconic roar of Mumias Sugar Company’s machines is once again producing the natural sweetness that belongs on our retail shelves and in our homes.” he acknowledged.

Mudavadi who was once the minister for agriculture during the late president Moi’s regime said the government is committed to creating a thriving environment with forward-thinking policies that will empower investors and sugarcane farmers to work hand in hand towards the revival of the sugar industry across the country.

He said through government interventions like the subsidized fertilizer programme, farmers will benefit in a big way.

Mudavadi said Monday’s experience to the farmers as the first recipients of Sugar bonuses, is a sign of a new beginning not only in the sugar sector but at large in the agricultural sector.

He however regretted that corruption has also affected other big government and public projects denying Kenyans income and jobs while a few individuals pocket large amounts of money from the sweat of innocent citizens.

He also called on the people of Western Kenya to remain steadfast and support the government’s policies and programmes under the Bottom-Up Transformation Agenda which is the foundation of President Ruto’s administration manifesto for a better Kenya.

We need to be strategic as a people and work with President Ruto for us to move forward together as a united people and as a united Kenya. Now the President is not only my boss but also my party leader and when I decide, I am always strategic,” noted Mudavadi.

Chief of staff of Kakamega county government resign a citing dysfunctional administration

The chief of staff of the county government of Kakamega Mr. Ken Echesa has resigned.

In his resignation letter to the Governor, Ferdinard Barasa cited various reasons ranging from collapsing health systems to education issues.

He wrote ” After days of consultations and based on a forty-day experience, I have resigned from the office of the Chief of Staff of Kakamega County.

I tendered my resignation to the Governor this morning and wished him well.

In my communication to the Governor, I have brought to his attention the worsening situation in our medical facilities – to imagine that our health sector is working is to live a lie.

I personally believe the Chief Officer of Health is painting a picture of a working system when the department is no longer a going concern.

Secondly, I have asked him to reform the Finance department and ensure contractors who have rendered their services in good faith are paid.

The staff who have their pending requests too ought to be paid. ECDE teachers who retired ought to be paid their dues.

The Sacco deductions as well as tax deductions should be remitted as provided by law.

I believe the Chief Officer of Finance should be called to order on this or else the system shall sink deeper.

Lastly, I have asked him to disregard the advice he continues to receive from a few people around him and reconnect with the common man.

Brethren this is advice you can only render when you are out of a system.

As an Advocate, I believe I owe a moral duty to society and refuse to be drawn into political hero-worshipping of a system I believe is not on the right track. When I took over the role, I believed then that I would be of use to His Excellency.

I am unable to go past the Berlin wall created by the inefficient forces I have mentioned and offer constructive advice to the Governor.

As a gentleman, I have directed that my December 2024 may be forfeited in lieu of notice and my January pay is used to buy BCG vaccines which though crucial have been unavailable at Kakamega County referral hospital.

Many thanks to those who wished me well for the period I served.

I will be back to class to teach law as well as private practice as was doing prior to this appointment.”

Results Oriented Cabinet Decisions of 2025

0

By Billy Mijungu

The Cabinet dispatch of January 21st, 2025, is poised to go down as one of the most consequential policy milestones of President William Ruto’s administration. Among the transformative decisions announced was the reduction of state corporations from 271 to 250. While this is a laudable first step, it should serve as a precursor to broader reforms aimed at correcting inefficiencies and enhancing accountability. As these corporations wind down, it is imperative to conduct comprehensive audits to ensure there is no cover-up of financial losses incurred during their operations. Transparency in this process will be key to restoring public trust.

Equally vital is the government’s focus on making state corporations financially self-reliant. In 2024 alone, pending bills from these entities stood at an alarming 94 billion shillings, highlighting the unsustainable reliance on the exchequer. By fostering financial independence, the government can reduce this burden while promoting better governance.

Another groundbreaking decision is the move to make travel and entry to Kenya truly free for all Africans. By eliminating visa requirements and ensuring instant approvals for others, the government is set to redefine tourism and continental integration. This visionary approach will not only attract visitors but also strengthen Kenya’s position as a hub for African unity and cooperation.

The Cabinet also unveiled the Kenya Cloud Policy, a critical step in solidifying the country’s reputation as the Silicon Savannah. Hosting data centers will position Kenya as a digital innovation leader, creating jobs and attracting investments in the technology sector. Furthermore, the redefinition of foreign policy signals a commitment to bolstering Kenya’s global standing while ensuring that domestic priorities remain at the forefront.

A significant emphasis was placed on curbing inefficiencies at the county level. The era of counties abusing their mandates through duplication of functions must come to an end. By ensuring conditional transfers are utilized as intended, the government is reinforcing accountability and service delivery across devolved units.

Agricultural productivity, particularly in the grain sector, has reached historic highs, with output surpassing 800,000 tonnes. The new plant policy is expected to build on this success, boosting productivity and food security.

The Cabinet’s decisions underscore a results-oriented approach to governance, one that prioritizes efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. These bold steps reflect a commitment to building a Kenya that is not only self-reliant but also globally competitive. The path ahead is clear—deliberate action, accountability, and innovation must remain the hallmarks of this administration.

Hard Talk: Owalo: Let’s interrogate the quality of leaders we elect in Nyanza

0

By Anderson Ojwang

A conversation on the sticky, thorny and emotive quality of leaders elected to the Parliament, County Assembly, Senate and Governor in Nyanza is gaining momentum, with various leaders, scholars and residents voicing concern.

The debate now zeroes in on why Luo Nyanza have subsequently elected leaders based on patronage, and financial strength instead of quality, merit, performance parameters, and academic and leadership acumen.

Deputy Chief of the Staff, in charge of Performance and Delivery Management Mr. Eliud Owalo last weekend in Uyoma village of Rariada constituency took the bull by the horn before party leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Raila Odinga over the quality of leaders from the region elected to various posts in every election.

ODM is the predominant party in Nyanza in the last four elections namely 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2022 where it has won nearly all the parliamentary, senate, governor and county assembly seats and enjoys a fanatic following.

An ODM ticket is an assurance to an elective post in Nyanza with voters preferring to vote on party lines following the party’s mantra of “ our house is one and we have war ahead”.

Owalo said the time had come for the community to interrogate the quality of leaders elected by the community in each subsequent election.

One lesson we learn from the late Roseline Odede is that it is important to have individuals of impeccable credentials and proven track records to hold positions in this country.

Roseline excelled in everything that she did, all the positions she held in the public sector. And I want to challenge all professionals who are here, not to shy off from holding positions in public spaces.

Roseline has done it and you can equally do it. To the ladies who are here, Roseline has shown you that you can equally do it.

It is time for us professionals from Nyanza to interrogate the quality of leaders that we have elected in the recent past,

As professionals from Nyanza, we must interrogate the quality of leadership more so in the political space.  These people come from nowhere and then declare that they are contesting for a seat, just because they have some little money to distribute out.

Let us interrogate the quality of leadership we have in this region. So that we can have the best at the county assembly level, the best at the parliamentary level, the best at the governor level, and the best at the senate level.

This is how we can bring transformative leadership at all levels so that we can have a paradigm shift in the governance of this country.

To the professionals who are here don’t shy away and confine yourself to the private sectors. Come out and run for these positions.

Let us have professionals leading the region. It’s unfortunate that the political space has been awash with people of unknown track record who we elect at every election.

In the recent past, we have witnessed elections of people with no development track records. They come from nowhere after they have made some money and they buy their way to the elective posts.

Let us interrogate the quality of leadership to have the best at all levels. We must have transformative leadership.

Professionals must not shy off and should run for these positions. Let us have professionals run for the seat for a member of the county assembly, let us have professionals run parliamentary, governor, senate and presidency starting from the elections coming in 2027,” he said.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo tickled the crowd by saying, “Have you listened to what my uncle Owalla has said? That if you are not a professional you should not come to contest for the Rarieda parliamentary seat against Otiende Amollo. That is what he said and that I have now comprehended it.”

Political analyst Dr Otieno Obondi agreed with Owalo’s sentiments saying blanket elections of leaders to various levels of management without interrogating their competence and performance has contributed to poor performance of most of the  MCA, MPs, senators and governors from the region

In most cases, most of the mcas are illiterate and corrupt. They cannot participate effectively in the house debates and are passengers during the discussions. They cannot generate motions and this is why our assemblies are lame-duck.

They want to make money and get rich quickly so they engage in corruption. Most of the elected and nominated MCAs are illiterate and this is where the ran began to beat us,” he said.

Dr Otieno said the community must make a hard decision to elect leaders on their competence, values and performance and development record indicators and should not blindly vote for one based on the party of the moment.

In 2027, Nyanza people must ask the hard and tough question. Do we vote based on party euphoria or do we look at various ideals and values in a leader when we go to vote?

We have time to correct the previous mistake and give the community a fresh start. It’s up to the voters to make the hard choice,” he said.

Belgut MP Nelson Koech in one of the video clips that went viral said,” There are people who have become collateral beneficiaries of Raila candidature in every election. There are politicians from Luo Nyanza who wound never want to hear that Raila leaves the political scene.

Because they have benefitted in their entire life being elected because of only being associated with Raila Odinga, They do no development. In our constituencies, we have competition. That is why someone was asking me that most of the leaders from our region are relatively young for instance  Kissi, Kericho and Nandi, it is because you must deliver.

If you don’t deliver you are kicked out. But there are parts of this country. That delivery doesn’t matter. You just have to say Baba Tosha and you are into the parliament, senate, governor or whichever office you are running for.

Those people want to hold Raila at ransom. They don’t want him to win the AU seat, They are praying he doesn’t win because if he wins, they are politically dead,”.

How the current Kisumu’s city geospatial plan will spur its growth

0

By Anderson Ojwang

The new geospatial plan for Kisumu City is a milestone in redefining the planning and the growth of the city in Kenya and Africa.

The Kisumu physical and land use development plan is envisaged to be implemented in 15 years and has divided the city into zones to spur development.

“The new plan will give value to land and through it, we envisage the city take off in terms of industrialization, real estate and other infrastructural development,” said Mr. Abala Wanga, the City Manager.

He said through the support of the Former Prime Minister and with the negotiation of Governor Peter Anyang Nyong’o’s administration with the French Government, the project got its funding through the Urban Support program.

“Kisumu geospatial plan has gone through all the legal process from the assembly and was launched officially. It is a legal document for the county government of Kisumu,” he said.

The plan came up with four zones that will guide the development of Kisumu City for the next 15 years namely the urban core area, which includes the lakefront and Central business district (CBD), the Urban renewable and regeneration area which includes the informal settlement, and eastern and northern extensions.

“ The new growth zones have been increased to 10. The map shows the first growth zone to be Kiboswa, Mamboleo, Kondele, Nyamasaria, Kibos, Chiga, Otonglo and Riat

Riat and Milimani have been demarcated as elite estates. In Riat Hills land ownership of land has been restricted to half an acre,” he said.

Abala said currently 46 per cent of the land in Kisumu City was vacant either through traditional ownership or undeveloped.

“We have prime areas for instance Dunga area, where we have semi-houses which could be converted into hotels and modern facilities. We ask the traditional owners to either enter into partnership with investors to develop or sell them and relocate to new areas and allow investors to develop the areas,’’ he said.

Abala said in the current plan Kibos area has been earmarked as an industrial park and it is anticipated to lead the industrial revolution of the city and Western Kenya at large.

“We expect the industrial park in Kibos will open the city to both manufacturing activities and the revived sugar industries will be pivotal in the growth.

We expect to move traders in Kondele and other parts of the city to the park to create employment for the people and have a central used business point,” he said.

He said the plan also provides for the creation of prime estates to offer both affordable housing and tackle the housing crisis in the city.

“Let the traditional land owners offload the land to allow for the construction of prime estate. Kisumu must develop and we must take a painful sacrifice.

It is sad that some people still bury their relatives in land in these envisaged prime estates. We will hold public participation to educate them and why they need to reconsider and seize the emerging land opportunity for their gain,” he said.

He said the plan also gives the provision of the lakefront that provides for the development of the front as a recreational facility for both local and international tourists.

Recently,  LV Marina, a lakefront facility was launched and the facility will offer luxurious residential homes, villas and apartments and state-of-the-art recreational facilities.

He said Kisumu is the cleanest city in Kenya and is ranked second in East Africa and position six in Africa and promised that within two years the city will compete for first position in East Africa and Africa.

Why Piny Luo Festival could be a vehicle for the community’s socioeconomic and cultural growth

0

By Anderson Ojwang

Retracing the Luo socio-cultural and economic values is a cornerstone to the community’s future survival and relevance to new emerging dispensations.

That is why Piny Luo was conceptualized in Pathola, Uganda, during the installation of Ker of the Pathola to foster unity among the various Luo-speaking groups in Africa, Australia, and other parts of the world.

That is how Piny Luo was born in Kenya. The first event was held in Homa Bay in 2023, and the most recent was held in Siaya in December 2024, which brought community representatives from various parts of Africa.

The clarion call for Piny Luo is about Luo’s social- cultural and economic identity in the present and future generations.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathews Owili says the Piny Luo initiative is a noble one that aims to spur the socio-economic and cultural growth of the community.

“The Luo community is diverse and we want to bring that diversity as a tool to create and recreate our social, cultural and economic agenda. It’s about setting an agenda through which we can pass over our practices to the next generations to come, ” he says.

Dr Owili says that by retracing the Luo identity and redefining the association, it would be possible and easy for the Luos across the various divides and spheres to help one another.

“We want to create the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood in Luos as a weapon to economic emancipation. We must walk and wake up to start our economic journey.

If you look at our history of migration, Luo as a community was socially, culturally and economically endowed. That is the journey we want to recreate for now and in the future,”  he says.

He says the committee that oversaw the recent Siaya Piny Luo festival was working on a report and a framework to develop the community’s socio-economic and cultural blueprint.

“We want to make the PinyLuo an annual cultural event just like the Maa,  Turkana, and Marakwet among others and use the event to educate the public of our values and practices,” he says.

Dr Owili said the recent event witnessed the presence of President William Ruto, Uganda President Yoweri Museveni and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga gracing the occasion.

“We had various Luo elders and leaders from Africa and other parts of the world . This was an important journey and now we have embarked on a mission to in future send teams to visit our brothers and sisters in various parts of the world to foster our unity,’’ he says.

President Museveni at the function said the age-long unity among the Luo community should now transit from only a political agenda to an economic one through the creation of creation and employment opportunities.

Museveni who was the Chief Guest at the event, challenged the community and its leadership to explore and exploit the four sectors of the economy to create wealth and employment opportunities.

“ I was invited to the Luo East Africa meeting by President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. This unity is a good move and we envisage it for East and Central Africa to develop economically.

You people are good, you play football, that is good. But we must be wealth creators.

It’s good to be in sports but we need to understand the East Africa market and its economy. I am a farmer, I am in agriculture, I look for markets and the Ugandan market is not enough.

I have seen several youths. I want to educate them on wealth and employment creation and where they come from. There is always a problem with the poor. They do not know where wealth comes from.

In Uganda, we have four sectors where wealth comes from and through it, we are able to create employment.

Wealth, where does wealth come from?  The poor do not know where wealth comes from.

The four sectors that wealth comes from in Uganda are Agriculture, Business,  Service, and Technology (Computers). Sports and hotels are service sectors among others.

People talk about employment and where it comes from.  It comes from the wealth creators who employ people.

In Africa, I hear people talk about employment but they do not say where employment comes from. Employment comes from the wealthy.

The wealth is mine but I employ people and they get work. So you people, it is good you play football and we are happy. But you must remember about life. Life is not only about football or sports, we must create wealth in order to create employment.

So where does the wealth and employment opportunities come from? I have told you about the four sectors. In any sector that you venture in, you will be able to create wealth.

All these sectors require a market. The Kenyan market is not enough, that is why we are discussing the East African market.

You need to understand the importance of the East Africa market; For instance, the United States of America (USA), they have economic strength mainly because of the large market.

In their neighborhood, there is Latin America. They have vast wealth but they live in abject poverty. The reason being they do not have an adequate market.

I cannot come here and fail to talk about economic dispensation and independence. I am a wealth creator back at home, I am in Agriculture and keep commercial livestock.

I am in dairy farming just like the Kenyan Maasai. I grow bananas. I have to look for a market. The Ugandan market help me but it is not enough, that is why I am saying as East Africa, Let us unite to get a bigger market

That is why I am grateful to witness the Luo festival, it is a vehicle to build a united East Africa  and Central Africa,” he said.

Matriarch and former  Karachuonyo MP Mama Phoebe Asiyo said President Museveni’s advice was timely and that the community should use its unity for economic empowerment.

“The Piny Luo festival was a positive move but now we must translate it into an economic agenda to create wealth and riches for the community. It is time we dedicated our strength and knowledge to an economic agenda,” she said.

Mama Asiyo challenged the governors, professionals and leaders from Nyanza to take up the leading role in the re-engineering of the region’s economic agenda for prosperity.

Are the past actions as Deputy President back to haunt Rigathi ?

The impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could be fast waking up to the reality of the past when he was the country’s second most senior person in the administrative pecking orders.

The reality could be dawning on the former deputy president on his actions and reactions to various emerging issues when he was in the office and now is blaming his boss, President William Ruto.

During his tenure in the office of Deputy President, Rigathi rubbed both leaders and the public on the wrong side and now he is claiming that his actions and reactions were dictated and directed by his former boss.

On Sunday, when he spoke in Laikipia Rigathi claimed that President Ruto was the one instructing MPs on what to say and do in public.

If you see MPs speak, just know Ruto has sent them. I was with him. He could write for me what to say.

He wrote to me what to say on various occasions and on the third occasion, I realized this man was not right. You remember how I used to speak and talk and then suddenly I changed.

You know he sits there, he has a pen and a paper, writes to you what to say. I realized that the president was setting me up with Kenyans.

For instance, the issue of shareholdings, that made be to be impeached. He is the one who told me to traverse the country and tell people about shareholding.

So one day he goes out and says he was speaking about shareholding as primitive and retrogressive yet he is the one who told me to say that.

He again told me that the old man of Kitandawili (former Prime minister Raila Odinga) that there will be no day, we will allow him to come close to us.

After I had said that on various occasions, I only saw Ruto with Uganda President Yoweri Museveni and Raila grazing cows in Uganda.

I realized that if I continued listening and following what he said, I would be lost.

He continued to write for me what to say. I would keep the paper in my coat pocket and would speak about different issues and not what he wrote for me.

All these MPs you see speak. He is the one who writes for them what to say. When that MP from Western says that Mt Kenya will be isolated. That is not the MP speaking, that is William Ruto. In Jesus’ name, let him be defeated.

I want to promise you, President William Ruto, here today in Laikipia, that you will not succeed in isolating the people of Mt Kenya from the rest of Kenyans.

I want to promise you William Ruto, you will not succeed in dividing Mt Kenya east and west, it will not happen.

I want to promise you William Ruto you will not kick the people of Mt Kenya out of the government,” he said.

Rigathi was impeached for among other reasons promoting tribalism, undermining the unity of the country, and promoting shareholding of the government among others.

Rigathi said he had placed trappers in specific corners of the State House to snare former Prime Minister  Raila Odinga from gaining access to the president.

He said he had informers who would call him should Raila be spotted in State House or near the president.

However, Ruto and Raila entered into a political handshake that birthed the broad-based government and currently the bromance between the two leaders is so telling.

Former Nyakach MP Ochieng Daima said Rigathi was being haunted by his past actions and reactions and was looking for a soft place to lay the blame.

I really do not understand the claims by Rigathi that President Ruto dictated and directed to him on what to say in the public. Is Rigathi an infant who was being trained in speech? This is a total lie. Let him carry his own cross,” he said.

Ochieng said Rigathi was on a mission to be the leader of Mt Kenya and that was why he was concocting lies and using Ruto as his scapegoat and campaign tool.

He said Rigathi should accept his past and live in peace with the deeds instead of blame game.

Let Rigathi speak the truth as a Christian.  He like lying and playing victim to the public gallery. We have not forgotten his hatred for some communities.” he said.

Homa Bay MP Peter Kaluma wrote in X handle  “Our Mt Kenya brothers took oath back in 1969 that presidency would never go beyond Mt Kenya, For this reason, whenever the presidency  goes to a person  outside Mt Kenya, they frustrate, create anarchy  and fuel civil unrest,
