Eyes on Kikuyu town: Ichung’wa brands Gachagua a bully, as the former DP to hold a rally in the town

By Anderson Ojwang

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa has described former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua as the latter heads to the constituency for a political engagement.

Ichung’wa, the Assembly Majority Leader and President William Ruto’s blue-eyed boy in Mt Kenya, will today, this Saturday, play host to a strange visitor, a political foe.

Kikuyu constituency will act as the battleground for a superiority contest between Ichung’wa and the self-declared king of the mountain, Gachagua.

Both leaders are breathing fire and ready for a showdown, with Gachagua warning Ichung’wa that tomorrow (today) he will be in Kikuyu.

“Tomorrow we will be in Kikuyu. Kasongo has allegedly given Ichung’wa money to cause chaos. We will not be cowed,” he vowed.

Gachagua picked a tirade with Ichung’wa from Nyandarua during the burial of the Ol Kalou MP, where he accused the Majority Leader of misleading the president and being responsible for the fallout.

He first wrote to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, alleging planned disruption of his rally in Kikuyu town by goons.

But Ichung’wa did not take it lying down either; he also wrote to the Inspector General of Police, Kanja, over what he termed as violent campaigns by Gachagua.

“The people of Kikuyu deserve adequate police protection. You should therefore ensure sufficient security presence to protect residents, their property, and businesses, and not fall into Gachagua’s trap of choreographed violence and destruction,” he wrote.

He accused the former DP of profiling security officers in the area and said his remarks were meant to cause chaos.

Separately in an interview, he referred to Gachagua as a bully who wants his way in everything, noting that the outburst of the outspoken Democracy for Citizens leader during the burial of former Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho shows that he is not fit for leadership.

“Gachagua is just a bully who believes he can bludgeon everyone into submission. He, however, knows my steel and imagines that if he manages to cow me, being the senior most MP from Mt. Kenya region and with a strong development record and a strong constituency support base, all the others will cower and follow him,” said Ichung’wa.

Ichung’wa said Gachagua’s hope is that if he succeeds in his intimidations, he would then have the numbers to further intimidate and blackmail President William Ruto.

“This is characteristic of his blackmailing tendencies, the same blackmail that ejected him from office,” added Ichung’wa.

Of all the leaders supporting Ruto’s reelection, it is Ichung’wa who seems to be irking Gachagua the most.

On Wednesday, Gachagua berated Ichung’wa as Ruto watched during the tense moment at the requiem mass of the late Ol Kalou MP. The enraged Gachagua spoke directly and without hesitation.

He reminded the president of past advice and blamed some of his current allies for political troubles in the Mt. Kenya region. He singled out Ichung’wa in remarks that quickly shifted the mood from mourning to open political contest.

“Nilikuambia kabla hatujakosana. Nilikuambia. Nikakuambia hawa vijana unatembea na hawa, watakuweka kwa shimo. Hawa kina Ichung’wa nilikuambia watakuweka kwa shimo,” Gachagua said.

He stood a few metres from Ruto as he spoke, marking their first time on the same platform since his exit from office. Gachagua went further and warned the president about the political cost of ignoring his earlier advice.

“Mimi nilikushauri rais nikakuambia hawa watu wa mlima hawapendi usaliti. I told you that betrayal is not forgiven among our people. You chose to listen to Kimani Ichung’wa. Sasa hii jamii imekukataa,” he added.

“Sasa huyu Ichung’wa alikuambia Riggy G atasahaulika baada ya wiki mbili, sasa ni miaka ngapi? Mr President, nakuomba ndugu yangu, you are my brother, tafadhali, tafuta amani na hii jamii. Tafuta amani na hii jamii. Usiskize hawa watoto.”

Ichung’wa in turn on Wednesday in Parliament led MPs in condemning Gachagua over his remarks, with legislators now calling for tougher laws against politicians who spread hate, especially during funerals.

“What I heard yesterday was outright tribal bigotry, someone pretending to speak on behalf of the President,” Ichung’wa stated.

Ichung’wa downplayed concerns over Gachagua’s planned visit to Kikuyu, saying all leaders are welcome, but warning against incitement.

“He says he’s coming to Kikuyu this Saturday, and we welcome everyone. What we reject is ferrying goons to loot businesses,” he noted.

Speaking in Laikipia, Gachagua stood by his remarks, insisting they were justified. He, however, expressed doubt that his complaints against Ichung’wa would be acted upon by the President.

“I lodged a complaint against Ichung’wa yesterday, but it felt pointless. I later asked myself, was I wasting my time?” Gachagua posed.

The battle of the mountain is shaping up as Gachagua versus Ichung’wa, with the latter playing the lead role in campaigning for President Ruto.

Tuju in Rarieda, indicates his burial site, declares no state engagement and 48-hour interment will

Former Cabinet Minister Raphael Tuju shocked his family and villagers when he arrived in Rarieda and pointed out two potential burial sites should he be killed fighting over his properties.

Tuju also directed that no government officials or support should be allowed or entertained at his funeral, terming them as the source of his woes.

He similarly gave a 48-hour will for his body to be interred and joins top leaders from the region, former prime minister the late Raila Odinga who gave a will, and former chief of defense forces Francis Ogolla who left a time will for their burial.

“Raila died and gave 72 hours. Ogolla also died and gave 48 hours. I have told my people very clearly that when it comes to my death, I would like to be buried within 48 hours. I would not like to see any state participating or pretending to be engaged in my funeral. I have made the final decision, and now I am ready for anything,” he said.

During the announcement, some of the relatives and residents broke down in tears, fearing for Tuju’s life, and demanded that the government protect him.

Last month, Tuju declared that only over his dead body will he lose his property after an auctioneer went to claim the facility.

“They had no court order and court papers. They just think they can come and intimidate me so that they can come and take over my property. It is very simple what they have to do. They have to shoot me to get a big burial for me in Rarieda Constituency. I am sure my constituents will come to mourn. After I have been put into the grave, then they can come and take the property through such kind of impunity. I am not going to take this kind of intimidation. It is very simple. They kill me first. I am not taking that kind of intimidation,” he said.

Tuju recently went missing after he claimed he was being trailed by an unmarked vehicle and reported and recorded a statement with the police over threats to his life.

Tuju resurfaced but was later arrested by the police and taken to Karen Police Station. He developed a medical condition while at the station and was given first aid before he was transferred to the ICU at Karen Hospital.

On Wednesday, he took a plea over the alleged giving of false information to a public officer, pleaded not guilty, and was released on a personal bond of Sh 100,000 and was asked to present a contact.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions told the court that Tuju knowingly misled law enforcement, an offence that undermines effective policing and public trust.

Tuju pleaded not guilty to the charges before Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo.

The magistrate also directed the OC Karen to provide Tuju with P3 forms to be filled by him after he allegedly sustained injuries during the arrest.

Tuju, who appeared to be in pain after his release, told the media that he will seek treatment abroad after he suffered injuries during the arrest.

“I am very thankful to my medical team. They have done great work on my health, and I hope to seek medical treatment abroad soon,” he said.

He said during the arrest, the officers allegedly manhandled him and created some disturbance on his spine and other limbs, which are supported by screws.

“I am on painkillers. I feel better when I stand, and I cannot sit for long. I am grateful to Kenyans who continue to pray for me,” he said.

Tuju said he has no apology to make to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and expressed optimism that one day the truth will come out.

“Wherever I hide is not a problem provided that I am safe. My safety is more important to me than anything else. I owe no apology to the DCI,” he said.

Tuju said he was now more invigorated to fight for his premises and will not be intimidated.

“I am ready to protect my property legally and with my blood. I know soon, the truth will come out. It is just a matter of time,” he said.

“These instruments now lay the groundwork for practical collaboration. The true measure of our success will lie in the impact these instruments will have on the lives of our citizens and not just in the documents signed.” noted Mudavadi.

Mudavadi said Kenya views Morocco as a strategic partner in advancing economic transformation and South-South cooperation and it remains committed to further deepening collaboration in trade, investment, and industrial development, particularly in areas where Morocco has demonstrated comparative advantage.

He noted that Morocco has advanced in areas of renewable energy, automotive manufacturing, agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, and large-scale infrastructure where Kenya will be borrowing largely in advancing the newly signed bilateral agreements.

“We remain committed to expanding opportunities for Kenyan products and enterprises within the Moroccan market and beyond. In addition, Morocco has also continued to support free eye clinics where hundreds of patients have benefited from life changing surgical interventions.” noted Mudavadi.

At the regional and multilateral fora, Kenya and Morocco have reaffirmed shared commitment to strengthen cooperation with a view to advancing common African positions, promoting peace and security, and supporting sustainable development.

The two countries continue to find common purpose within the African Union and the United Nations a reflection of shared commitment to multilateralism, peaceful resolution of conflicts, and African-led solutions that advance stability and prosperity on the African continent.

“Towards this end, Kenya supports the United Nations framework as an exclusive mechanism to finding a lasting and durable political solution to the dispute over the Sahara issue with the relevant UNSC resolutions on this matter. The exclusivity of the United Nations in this political process remains pivotal and we reaffirm support to the UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2756 (2024).” said Mudavadi.

Thursday’s meeting resolved that the next session of the Joint Commission will be held in the Kingdom of Morocco on dates to be agreed through diplomatic channels.

Karichu Climbs to the Top After Round Three Action of Sunshine Development Tour Q-School

By PHILLIP ORWA

John Karichu, Limuru Country Club professional moved into the outright lead after round three of the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing Qualifying School, capitalizing on a dramatic shift at the top of the leaderboard on Thursday.

The Limuru Pro carded a composed 1-under par 71 to move to a total of 1-under par 215, taking a slender one-shot advantage into the final round, with his round featuring five birdies at the 1st, 6th, 8th, 15th and 18th holes, as he steadily climbed past the overnight leaders with a measured display of consistency.

His late birdie on the 18th capped off a strong finish and handed him control heading into Friday’s decisive final round.

Karichu said “It was a solid day for me. I stayed patient, especially early on, and tried to keep putting myself in good positions. I knew the course would test everyone today, so the key was to stay disciplined and take the chances when they came.

Getting those birdies, especially coming home, was important. But there’s still one more round to go, so nothing is done yet. The focus now is to stay calm, stick to my game plan and try to finish the job tomorrow.”

Karichu’s rise came as overnight leader Ali Wasim endured a difficult third round. The elite amateur, who had led after each of the first two rounds, returned a 3-over par 75 to slip into second place at level par 216.

Wasim’s round saw him struggle to maintain the momentum that had carried him through the opening two days, wiping out the three-under cushion he had built. Despite the setback, he remains firmly in contention heading into the final round.

Wasim said “It was one of those days where a few things just didn’t go my way. I made some mistakes that cost me, but that’s golf. The important thing is that I’m still right there and still have a chance going into the final round.

Tomorrow is all about resetting mentally, staying patient and trusting my game. I’ve put myself in a good position over the first three days, so it’s about giving it one more strong push.”

Round one co-leader William Odek sits third after carding a 2-over par 74, taking his total score to 2-over par 218. Odek remains within striking distance and could still mount a final-round challenge.

American professional Andrew Procter is fourth on 3-over par 219, while elite amateur Sammy Mulama occupies fifth on 4-over par 220. India’s Sujan Shah is sixth at 7-over par 223, keeping the leaderboard tightly packed heading into the final round.

With the final round set for Friday, the Qualifying School remains finely poised, with several players still in contention for top honours and valuable ranking positions as they chase Sunshine Development Tour status for the 2026/27 season.

ODM says youths behind attack of Senator Osotsi are non-members, belong to a different formation

0

By Reporter

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has distanced itself from the goons who allegedly attacked Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu on Wednesday and injured him, and wants them arrested and prosecuted.

ODM has stated the youths have never been members of the party and in the previous regime were allied to the Jubilee Party and currently work for a different political formation.

“The reputation of the party should not be dragged into political thuggery and violence witnessed in Kisumu, and those involved should carry their own cross,” the statement read.

The party warned that anybody trying to drive a wedge between its members and the neighboring community over the incident must be called out, as it is far from the truth.

ODM said the unity between the Luo and Luhya communities has existed for decades and any attempts to bring division will be rejected at all cost.

The party’s acting Secretary General, Catherine Omanyo, condemned the incident and wants the Inspector General of Police to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of this heinous act.

She said ODM is united and any attempts to divide it through such machinations will not succeed.

“ODM allows and propagates freedom of speech and association. We are a democratic party and allow divergent views. Where we do not agree with them fully, we still respect their opinion in the spirit of freedom of association as embedded in the constitution,” she said.

The party appealed for calm among the two communities and the political leaders as the police carry out investigations.

Omanyo also appealed to party leaders to refrain from giving alarming statements to allow the police to undertake investigations.

Various leaders have condemned the attack on Osotsi in Kisumu on Wednesday by goons, who sustained serious injuries and was admitted at Aga Khan Hospital before he was later flown to Karen Hospital in Nairobi.

Osotsi, in his press statement, said the incident should not be used to stigmatize the region as it was an isolated incident.

ODM said Kisumu is a peaceful city and the isolated case of thuggery should not be used to undermine investment.

Fingers have been pointed at a political youth for having masterminded the attack on the Senator.

Police have called for calm as they investigate the attack and have promised to arrest the culprits.

Mt Kenya shows mature politics while Nyanza falls for immature one

0

By Anderson Ojwang’

On Wednesday, the country’s leading political blocks, Nyanza and Mt Kenya, displayed two sets of politics: maturity and immaturity.

In Nyandarua, they hosted President William Ruto for a burial of the Ol Kalou MP. After weeks of warring and public abuse between President Ruto and his impeached deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, they finally met for the first time after the impeachment.

Ahead of the meeting, the political atmosphere was tense, with the media predicting a possible confrontation at the burial. President Ruto was accompanied by his political troops, while Rigathi, the self-declared king of the Mountain, also mobilized and was accompanied by his lieutenants and arrived at the venue ready for a showdown, which turned out to be a melodrama.

In Nyandarua, Mt Kenya raised the bar high when the expected political showdown between President Ruto and Gachagua was turned into melodrama.

While in Kisumu, out of the blue, the region sunk to its lowest when political goons attacked Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi over his political affiliation and left him admitted at the hospital with serious injuries.

The attack put Kisumu in the spotlight over the emergence and increasing number of political gangs in the region ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kisumu, which had shed off the bad image of political violence and thuggery, is fast sliding back to the old habit of political goons and intolerance that had negated investment in the region.

In Nyandarua, Gachagua relayed and read out a riot act to the residents to respect President Ruto, and his usual slogan of “one term” was vetoed.

Apart from lamentations and crying foul over his impeachment, the audience remained calm with no shouting or any form of disturbance.

Gachagua laughed off earlier predictions by the media that the burial would be confrontational.

Even in the program that went viral on social media and had no mention of the opposition, Gachagua and his team were still accommodated and provided with space and time to speak.

Gachagua warned the mourners and the residents that President Ruto deserves respect and that he doesn’t want to hear any shouts of “Ruto must go.”

“Today is a solemn moment. I want the president to speak and you give him respect. I don’t want to hear anyone shouting ‘one term,'” he said.

He said Mt Kenya loved and respected Ruto but he betrayed them, and that will be sorted out at the 2027 general elections.

“Ruto has come in good faith. Let us respect him. Let him speak and go,” he said.

Gachagua then turned to lamentation, accusing President Ruto of chasing him from his office to Wamunyoro.

“You chased me, and I went to Wamunyoro. We are listening to the ground, and we will sort our differences at the ballot,” he said.

Gachagua went ahead to introduce his team of sitting MPs, senators, MCAs and aspirants allied to him and joined a hymn after he concluded the introduction.

In Kisumu, with no provocation, goons attacked Osotsi at Java Restaurant and left him with serious injuries over his political affiliation, which is opposed to President Ruto’s two-term bid.

In a statement by his director of communication, Mr Derick Luvega, the Senator had made a routine visit to the Acacia area for personal grooming (to take a shave) before proceeding to Java Restaurant.

“At the restaurant he met a friend and interacted cordially with members of the public for approximately thirty minutes. It was during this time that a group of gun-wielding individuals confronted him, questioning his political stance and subsequently subjecting him to physical manhandling. They demanded to know why he is supporting one-term and not two-term,” he said.

The Senator is a principal in the ODM faction of Linda Mwananchi, which is against the pre-election coalition arrangement between ODM and UDA.

Osotsi was recently sacked as the ODM deputy party leader during the Special Delegates Conference, which confirmed Dr Oburu Oginga as the party leader, Governor Simba Arati and his Mombasa counterpart Abdulsamad Nassir as deputy party leaders, while Homa Bay’s Gladys Wanga was confirmed as the National Chairperson.

Siaya Governor James Orengo, a member of the faction, termed the incident as unfortunate and blamed the government for the attack.

“This political attack is happening to him in Kisumu for a second time. The police know what is happening, and the police are being used in Kisumu,” he said.

Orengo said during their rally in Kakamega, the Kisumu airport was surrounded by goons to deny them entry into town.

“This is making Kisumu a small port of thugs. Thugs and goons run the city, and it is happening in broad daylight,” he said.

Orengo said the incident was giving Kisumu a bad name and immature politics in the region.

“We are creating immature and primitive politics in this part of the country. It has never happened like this that goons control politics,” he said.

ODM Vice Chairman Dr Otiende Amolo expressed disappointment over the alleged attack on the Senator.

“This act of cowardice, political intolerance and goonism must be condemned and stamped out. If we don’t, 2027 might be ominous,” he wrote on his social media handle.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathews Owili condemned the incident, saying the county leadership encourages democracy and divergent views.

“Kisumu County will not tolerate any form of political violence, intimidation, or criminal activities within its jurisdiction. Those who imagine that they can undermine peace and stability through acts of brutality are gravely mistaken,” he said.

Lamenting Gachagua’s mixed signal to Ruto: “We can still work with you”

0

By Anderson Ojwang

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, for the first time after his impeachment, shared a platform with his former boss President William Ruto at a burial in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County, and sent a conflicting and mixed signal.

Gachagua told President Ruto there was a possibility they could work together in future because he, Gachagua, was an old man.

“When you go to Luo land, don’t abuse us as tribalists. We can still work with you. I am an old man,” he said.

Gachagua said the Mt Kenya community supported and voted for President Ruto and that he should look for peace with the community.

“Look for peace with the Mt Kenya community. We did not vote for you because you were called Njoroge or Kamau but Kipchirchir arap Ruto out of love. You have 14 months to work for the region and seek peace,” he said.

But Ruto responded that he is aware that he was voted for by Mt Kenya and that he knows what he is doing.

“Do not bring me your wars with other people. I don’t ask permission to go anywhere in this country. I will go to any place I want, and I don’t ask for permission,” he said.

He told the people of Mt Kenya not to be blackmailed and not to worship a fellow human being.

“I will answer my opponents through development. At the moment, I am still working for Kenyans. When the time for campaigns comes, I will show them dust,” he said.

He said the media had speculated that the burial would be confrontational.

Gachagua told President Ruto that before he was impeached and when they still worked together, he had warned him that his political mentees from Mt Kenya would lead him into a pit.

“I warned you these boys would lead you to the pit. In my community, we don’t forgive betrayal. You betrayed them and me,” he said.

He said the Mt Kenya community has rejected him because of betrayal and he will not get their votes.

Recently Ruto and Gachagua had engaged in a bare-knuckle fight of body shaming and public abuses.

In a recent burial in Kirinyaga, Gachagua apologized to former president Uhuru Kenyatta and Mt Kenya for misleading them to vote for Ruto.

Gachagua dismissed allegations that he cannot work with former president Uhuru, terming them as wishful thinking.

“They say Uhuru cannot work with Riggy. You think you are one of us. You don’t know us. We are a family, and Uhuru is my elder brother,” he said.

Gachagua said he diligently served Uhuru as a personal assistant and highly respects him.

“I have been Uhuru’s personal assistant. I have worked with him for 20 years. We only differed for three years,” he said.

Gachagua said it was President William Ruto who sowed a seed of division between Uhuru and him and that now they have reconciled and remain as a family.

“It is you who divided us. You came with a bible and conned us. I blame myself. I misled my people. I want to tell our people that we must be very smart not to allow Ruto to divide us along Mt Kenya East and West. I cannot allow him. Kikuyu and Meru are one community,” he said.

Gachagua said the Mt Kenya community cannot make the mistake of 1992, when former president Daniel Moi divided the two leading leaders, the late Mwai Kibaki of the Democratic Party and the late Kenneth Matiba of Ford-Asili, and they lost in the presidential election.

Wasim, Odek Share Lead After Opening Round of Sunshine Development Tour Q-School in Limuru

By PHILLIP ORWA

Amateur Ali Wasim and William Odek set the early pace after carding matching rounds of 4-under par 68 in the opening round of the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing Qualifying School at Limuru Country Club.

Wasim produced one of the most composed rounds of the day, after getting off to a fast start with birdies on the 1st, 3rd and 4th holes, settling into a strong rhythm early on the front nine.

After dropping shots on the 7th and 11th, he responded by picking up another birdie on the 16th, with the standout moment coming at the par-5 15th where he eagled to move to the top of the leaderboard.

Odek matched that effort with a composed and clinical display, rolling in birdies on the 2nd, 3rd and 8th holes to build momentum early, before adding further gains on the 13th and 15th. A lone bogey on the 12th proved his only setback in an otherwise controlled round that kept him firmly alongside Wasim at the top of the leaderboard.

Odek said “It was a good round for me. I came in well prepared and had a chance to get comfortable with the course beforehand, which helped. I got off to a solid start and just tried to stay in rhythm throughout.

The driver was working really well for me today, and that gave me confidence, especially on the par 4s and par 5s where I could put myself in good positions. When you’re hitting it well off the tee, it makes the rest of the game a lot easier. At this stage, I’m not really thinking about winning. It’s about playing good, consistent golf and letting that take me where it will.”

Wasim, reflecting on his performance, emphasized the importance of staying composed throughout the round. “It was a lovely day out there, I really enjoyed it. I had a great group and we kept things relaxed, which helped. Limuru is a course I enjoy playing. I’ve got good memories here, and that always gives you a bit of confidence.

I didn’t have the perfect start with that early bogey on the 11th, but I stayed patient. The eagle was a nice bonus and gave me momentum, and from there I just tried to keep things steady. The ball was rolling well, so I was happy with how I managed the round overall.

This Tour is really important for us. It’s the future of Kenyan golf and a genuine pathway for players who want to take the next step, including turning professional. For me, this is a stepping stone, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to compete at this level.”

A tightly packed chasing group is tied for third place at 1-over par 73, featuring India’s Hetansh Shah, Tanzania’s Isaac Wanyeche and Kenya’s Sammy Mulama, all of whom will be looking to make an early move in the second round.

The Qualifying School has attracted a field of 55 players from across East and Southern Africa, alongside players from Europe, Asia and North America underscoring the growing regional and international appeal of the Sunshine Development Tour.

With three rounds still to play, the leaderboard remains wide open, setting up an intense battle for positions as players compete for ranking status and the opportunity to secure their place on the Sunshine Development Tour for the 2026/27 season.

Former Cabinet Minister Raphael Tuju took a plea over the alleged giving of false information to a public officer and was released on a personal bond of Sh 100,000 and was asked to present a contact.
